A Neighborhood Like No Other

Although it’s just a block and a half south of The Loop in Chicago, Printer’s Row is a neighborhood that feels like a well-kept secret. This tiny gem (just a few square blocks!) is located at the north end of South Loop, and offers history, charm, and convenience.

Printer’s Row stands out with its deep sense of history. Walking its streets feels like stepping back in time, thanks to towering, stunning, historic architecture. Once home to the city’s newspaper and book print shops, the neighborhood’s iconic brick buildings with oversized windows (originally designed to let in natural light for paper-making) still stand tall today. Most have been converted into residential buildings, giving you a chance to buy a condo or rent an apartment within the walls of Chicago’s history.

Printer’s Row is speckled with wine shops, vintage bookstores, and classic Chicago dive bars. Throughout the neighborhood, you’ll find small parks tucked away behind large trees. Despite its quiet nature, the neighborhood’s proximity to bustling areas like Grant Park, the Museum District, and The Loop ensures that everything you need is just steps away.

Printer's Row: Home

While Printer’s Row is tucked away in its own little world, it’s also incredibly accessible. Because of the proximity to The Loop, almost every CTA train line is within reach, along with nearby bus routes, a Metra station, and Union Station just a 10 minute walk away. Its proximity to major highways makes it easy to get in and out of the city, attracting a range of residents, including healthcare professionals working in the nearby Chicago Medical District.

Anchored by Dearborn Station, one of Chicago’s original train stations, Printer’s Row’s roots are fascinating. Once a hub for print shops and a red-light district, it’s evolved into a charming, family-friendly community.

Printer's Row: Culinary Delights

Printer’s Row is home to a variety of eateries that cater to every palate. Here are a couple of standout spots you won’t want to miss:

+  First Draft: This unassuming dive bar has one of the most impressive draft beer lists in the city, along with some of the best bar food you’ll ever taste. Pro tip: try the poutine.

+  Sofi: A family-owned Italian restaurant serving unbelievable homemade pasta. Their sister restaurant, Forno Mauri, specializes in delicious wood-fired pizza.

+  Umai: An incredible selection of sushi and other Japanese delicacies. Their ramen is fantastic, and their rolls are fresh and creative.

Printer's Row: Parks

Despite its proximity to some of the busiest parts of Chicago, Printer’s Row is home to several parks that feel like hidden sanctuaries:

+  Roosevelt Park: Just south of West Polk Street, this park is a peaceful retreat with pickleball and tennis courts, a playground, and a large grass field. It’s also a hotspot for neighborhood dog meetups.

+  Dearborn Park: This charming space feels like old New York City with its concrete benches, chessboard-topped tables, and a miniature amphitheater. Whether you’re feeding pigeons, relaxing in a hammock, or watching a spontaneous performance by the neighborhood kiddos, this park is pure magic.

+  Southbank Park: A privately owned yet publicly accessible stretch of riverfront boardwalk, Southbank Park features weeping willows, native plants, and a lighted path. It’s a quiet spot for a leisurely stroll under the shadow of the Willis (Sears, if you’re a fan of the classics) Tower.

+ Grant Park: Arguably the city’s most (or second most) famous park, Grant Park is just a 10 minute walk from the heart of Printer’s Row. Whether you’re looking for long morning runs through the tree-lined paths or a short commute to Lolla, Printer’s Row puts you a short distance from it all.

Printer's Row: Must-Visits

If you’re thinking about moving to Printer’s Row or are nearby and looking for a day trip to explore in the local atmosphere, these two spots perfectly capture the essence of the neighborhood:

+  Sandmeyer’s Bookstore: A family-owned independent bookstore that’s been around since 1982. Sandmeyers’ large selection, creaky wooden floors, and classic bookstore aroma make it a must-visit for all book lovers.

+  Printer’s Row Wine Shop: Wine is available by the bottle or the glass. This cozy spot offers indoor and outdoor seating complimented by candlelit ambiance. Pro tip: try the house-made seasoned nuts.

+  Jazz Showcase: Established in the 1940s, this venue has hosted some of the greatest names in jazz. The venue is stuffed with comfy couches, and the walls are papered with photos and autographs of some of the best jazz musicians to ever play.

+ Museum District: While technically a part of the larger South Loop neighborhood, the Museum District is just shy of a mile walk from Printer’s Row. Enjoy days at the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum, or catch a Bears game at Soldier Field, without worrying about the hassle of Uber surcharges.
